Suite for Solo Cello No. 1 in G Major, BWV 1007: I. Prélude - Yo-Yo Ma

Ma is amazing but this is not his best. I've heard him play Bach the normal way in concert berfore so perhaps he was trying something new in this recording. It doesn't have anything to do with the "wrong key" which is a matter of taste due to our tuning conventions. It works fine for me. What gets me is the mechanistic and unforgiving tempi and tone. At times it sounds almost robotic. He was a fan of Gould so it could be that he was taking his cue from him in trying to do something different. Except he's not Gould, he's Ma and the experiment was a failier to my ears at least. He's a better player then this recording leaves you to believe so don't let this scare you away. A change of pace Before I heard this album I was strictly a Hip-Hop and Rap fan. I never knew music could sound so amazing, and I am absolutely astounded by how much I enjoy it. Essential I love this piece of music and I've never heard it performed so beautifully. It touches my heart everytime I listen to it (which is A LOT). I STRONGLY suggest this CD to anyone who likes any kindof music.
