Brahms: Complete Symphonies - Berliner Philharmoniker & Sir Simon Rattle iTunes Store customer reviews:
Sound quality disappointing
I was disappointed and a little shocked as I first listened to the sound quality. It sounds to my ear a bit scratchy and even slightly distorted; something seems to be wrong with the engineering or the production. It is quite obviously a live recording (I admit I didn't realize this before buying), but that's not really the problem. It's not terrible, but just disappointing. Really? What about Abbado, etc.
I hate to break up the Rattle love-fest (and I count myself as a fan), but this is something of a disappointment. It's not actively bad, but it's nowhere near as good as Abbado's or Harnoncourt's with the same orchestra. This recording does neither the Berlin Philharmonic nor Rattle any favors. The sound is less than clear and Rattle's interpretations, while not objectionable, neither are they revelatory. Get one of the others. A classic in the making
I agree with the other reviewers, Rattle has come to terms with Brahms and with the Berliner. This recording has the depth and breadth of vison lacking in most recent offererings. Rattle is one who is never satisfied with past work and continually finds new and fresh ways to hear things, and he's brought the Berliner back in to top form to boot. This is a great recording. -Bz Rating: (Anonymous, 1969-12-31) Product reviewed: Brahms: Complete Symphonies - Berliner Philharmoniker & Sir Simon Rattle
Rattle and Berlin are a great combination
Both are quite Robust. This is a valuable addition to my Library. Highly recommended. Rating: (Anonymous, 1969-12-31) Product reviewed: Brahms: Complete Symphonies - Berliner Philharmoniker & Sir Simon Rattle
Stunning Sound, Sense of Drama
Finally, Rattle and Berlin are coming into synch High fidelity, good use of robato and pregnant pauses, nuances that surprise... A perfect follow-on to Abaddo's DG version. And, what's more, it's cheap! Rating: (Anonymous, 1969-12-31) Product reviewed: Brahms: Complete Symphonies - Berliner Philharmoniker & Sir Simon Rattle
Sir Simon Rattle + Berlin Phil + Brahms = Amazing
After listening to his first Brahms recording with the Berlin Phil, which won a Grammy award, I was hooked and wanted more. So it is an understatement for me to say how thrilled I am that Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Phil have recorded the complete Brahms symphonies. Brahms is truly at the center of the Berliner Phil’s sound and style of playing. The performance on this recording is truly Brahmsian in its warmth, lyrical flow and structural coherence. Sir Simon Rattle’s vision and iconoclastic approach to the Symphonies is truly a new milestone in the history of recordings of these works. This new recording is not only a valuable addition to any Sir Simon Rattle and Berlin Phil collector’s catalogue but also to all classical music enthusiasts around the world.
