Peerless Universal Speaker Mount Spk 811 - Speaker Bracket - Black Customer Reviews:
Excellent, high-quality speaker mount. But...
Rating dropped due to long-term problems--see update below. They look great and come with hardware for almost every mounting option. They include a bracket that can be attached to speakers without a built in keyhole or threaded insert. They have internal cable management. The clamping system works great on my 11# speakers, and it's a large twist ring instead of the usual hex screws. They have an extender (about 3") that allows wall or ceiling standoff. The problem is the very limited range of angle adjustment. The clamp system is a ball and socket arrangement that is tightened via the twist ring. The problem is that the twist ring constrains the adjustment range to about +- 30 degrees. While this isn't bad on a wall mount for, say, rear surrounds, it's a big problem for ceiling mounts as shown in the picture. In the photo the angle looks fine, but if you put these in the corners of a large room, they are basically shooting down instead of across the room. There's no included option to increase the maximum angle. I solved the problem by using their 1/4-20 coupler to join the screw coming out of the ball with a piece of threaded 1/4-20 stock that I had bent about 30 degrees. Works fine. Note that I had to locktite the threaded rods due to the torgue of the speaker. I also had to tighten the twist ring more than I could via hand tightening--no problem using a very large pair of pliers (pipe wrench would work also) thanks to the large size and robustness of the twist ring. Would have been impossible with one of the hex screw clamps used on other mounts. They look great, with a nice clean installation and no visible cables thanks to the built in cable management. Highly recommended with the caveat of the limited angle adjustment. Update 09 Aug 2010: Dropped to 2 stars. Ball joints drooped. 3 times. Couldn't lock with 17" channel locks and my wife holding the ladder so I could really torque the ball lock. This is with 7# bookshelf speakers. I finally solved my problem by carefully aligning them, quickly removing the speaker before the erectile disfunction set in, and driving a screw through the locking ring and the ball. They don't move now, but further adjustment if needed at a later date isn't going to be easy. Summary: These are high quality build with a great hardware kit, but didn't work for me as ceiling mounts for 7# speakers. Don't know what to say--everything I've tried sucks, especially the brackets with an allen screw on a small joint. These work now with the screws and hopefully I won't have to goof around with any more speaker mounts for a while. There's room in this market space for a better mousetrap.

Almost Universal
The product is easy to use. I purchased this product to hang Energy Micro speakers which have a keyhole on the back. The keyhole can be removed to expose a standard threaded attachment point. The manufacturer lists that a keyhole attachment is included along with standard threaded attachments which should have fit these speakers. As it turned out, the keyhole attachment would not work with the Energy Micro speaker keyhole (it was not long enough to slide in), AND the screw attached to the ball end of the mount was not long enough to reach the threads on the back of the speaker, which are recessed. I was however able to take an included piece and re-purpose it to lengthen the threads on the ball end of the mount by cutting the head off of a screw with a dremmel, gluing the two together & screwing the extension onto the screw attached to the end of the ball. Once this problem was solved, the product functioned as expected.

Would Not Recommend
These mounts claim to be able to hold 20 pounds. My speakers weigh less, and yet the mounts cannot hold up the speaker, so it droops against the wall rather than stands upright. On the plus side, the design is interesting, there is plenty of hardware to mount the speaker side of the bracket to the speaker, and the wall side of the mount is well made, simple and easy to mount. The problem is the weak link between the two sides (speaker side and wall side). I'd look for something else, but the best and cheapest solution would be a strong screw in the wall, and a hanger of some type mounted to the back of the speaker. That will easily hold 20 pounds close to the wall, and therefore, more upright.

Superb mounts with every mouinting option under the sun
I got these for my two pairs of Definitive Technologies Pro Monitor 1000 satellites on my home theater system. They are very solid and easily hold these fairly heavy (for their size) speakers. The PM1000s are a challenge not just for their weight but because the keyhole or threaded hole are on the extreme upper or lower end of the speakers and the leverage working against the mount's holding capacity is made even harder than if they attached at the center. These Peerless mounts were far stronger than Definitive's own proprietary mounts supposedly designed for my speakers. With the inferior DefTech mounts the PM1000s "drooped" no matter how much I tightened them. With these Peerless mounts they are solid as a rock. These also include any and every type of mounting option one can think of. Not as cheap as some other mounts out there but the build quality is clearly there and I won't risk my expensive satellites on cheapie mounts which might break.

Peerless Spk 811 20lb Mounts - Right for heavy speakers!
Peerless Spk 811's are a bit expensive at ~$20 each (sold individually), but well worth the cost to protect heavier and more expensive speakers, not to mention the people sitting below them! The mounts arrived as advertised in a timely manner from Amazon. Installation was easy into both the speaker and the room wall--I used a stud finder to ensure a solid connection. Solidly built, they maintain the designated alignment--very pleased overall. Would recommend to friends/family/clients. If they were able to fully articulate to 90 degrees off axis this would make them a five star in my book--although I don't know of any reasonably priced mounts which can do this for heavy speakers.
